To whom it may concern,
With regard to the draft Malmesbury neighbourhood plan I have the following
In general I support the majority of the plan with one exception. I feel that the Avon Mills
site is wholly unsuitable for the siting of a supermarket for reasons I will
Firstly do we really want one of the first things seen by the majority of visitors to our
lovely historic town to be a supermarket? Placing this supermarket right in the
historic town area will only have a detrimental effect on not only the landscape
but also the management of the local environment.
Secondly I fail to see how locating a supermarket on the edge of the town will attract
people to the high street. Living on the high street as I do I tend to find that
people tend not to visit due lack of interesting shops and restaurants. This is
a problem caused by very high business rates, rents and over zealous planners
and conservation officers stifling any growth that should be proposed.
I also fail to see that this site will have significant foot or cycle visitors, only those
in the area of the Silk Mills and lower high street are likely to do so with
most others taking a car. Shopping is heavy and in reality preferred to be
transported by car, its a shame but true, look how many people from the Reeds
farm estate drive to the Co op.
Surely the perfect place for a supermarket is the site on which one already exists at
Gloucester road and redevelopment of this area should be encouraged as a
priority. I would have thought as a second choice the brown field site of the
garden centre on the Crudwell road would be more appropriate. Although slightly
further out of town the site lends itself much better to this type of
I thank you for your time and for taking my comments into account.
