I am a Malmesbury resident, and, having
visited the exhibition at the Town Hall on Saturday 23rd March I would like to
make the following comments regarding Draft Plan Sections 2 and 3
A supermarket either Sainsbury or Waitrose
would lead to the DEATH OF THE HIGH STREET. We all know that these
supermarkets sell fresh meat, fish and bakery items- principally their own
brand in addition to newspapaers, stationery etc. The last thing
they wish to do is promote other people's products. I have
read that the developers have stated that they believe a supermarket would
encourage shoppers (including those on foot and cyclists!) to do further
shopping in the High Street!! This is of course NONSENSE. No
one suggesting this can have any knowledge of Malmesbury's geography to suppose
any able bodied person would willingly struggle up or down the steep hill
laden with supermarket shopping bags!!
Local shops are already suffering and closing because of the economic situation.
The presence of a new supermarket will prove their death
