Firstly, I wanted to say a very big thank you to you for the enormous amount of work
that you have put in to develop a plan that will help maintain, and enhance, the
beauty and character of our wonderful town.
Secondly, I did find the consultation process you have been through to be
excellent. Any town, and ours is no different, is a complex ecosystem in
which the many constituent parts have to function smoothly together for the
whole entity to prosper. The way that you presented such a wide range of
complex issues, showing their interrelatedness, but simplifying the narrative so
it was possible to understand the key points, was
Thirdly, I would like to state my strong support for the plan you have developed. My
specific comments are below:
Our town was established in the year 880. We need to be thinking about the
future of our town not just for now, but for many many future generations to come.
Housing stock in the UK turns over, I think, at about 1-2% per year.
This means that across the UK, something like 80% of the homes we will be
living in in 2050 have already been built. This gives us a
profound steer for our actions now. The decisions we make in the coming
months, in respect of housing and other development in the town, will
be with us for decades to come. We will not be able to undo them. And if these
decisions spoil the atmosphere of our town we, and our successors, will
rue the day we made them. This is the reason that the Neighbourhood Plan is so
Key aspects of the plan I applaud include, the decision to maintain the vibrancy
of the High Street (through resisting out of town supermarkets/superstores);
allowing a sensible amount of housing development but in the right
places (and reflecting changing demographics, but not detracting from
the views from the town and our walks, or have adverse environmental impact, or
exacerbate some of the problems we are currently living with, such as the
shortage of parking); care of our heritage - and ensuring that this, and our own
modern impacts, are worthy of being passed on.
So, to reiterate, I support the plan and would like to see it implemented.
We are lucky to have among us people with the talent and dedication to have
developed such a complex and high quality plan. Thank you again for your hard
work on our behalf.
