I would like to take this opportunity to say that, for the most part, I believe very strongly
in your Neighbourhood Plan and agree with the majority of your decisions. There
are, however, two points that I wish to raise in objection to your
1) Your support of a supermarket behind the Silk Mills. In light of the recent flooding
this should surely demonstrate that this is a most unsuitable site for a
supermarket as the water runoff would increase and make the risk of flooding
again even more likely. I have seen the calculations from David Whitby which
show that the proposed solution of providing tanks to drip feed into the river
are completely insufficient. I have also seen that English Heritage has strongly
opposed this site twice which should be considered very seriously. The view of
Malmesbury from the by-pass is stunning and must surely attract visitors to the
town and this will be completely lost if a supermarket is allowed on this site.
My final point on this matter is that you suggest that supermarket customers
will come into Malmesbury High Street but you are wrong. I use Tesco in Tetbury
regularly. This supermarket is within walking distance of the town centre yet I
have NEVER stopped in the town when I go to do my supermarket shopping there.
All I do is add traffic to their High Street, not custom. As our local
supermarket is only 5 miles away in Tetbury we really do not need another one in
Malmesbury and I believe this should be removed from the Plan.
2. You should stand up against proposed housing sites in a much more aggressive and
determined manner. We all understand that there are pressures to allow more
housing development but you should not accept quite as many as are being
proposed. You need to defend Greenfield sites and boundaries vehemently to
prevent Malmesbury from sprawling into an eyesore that cannot be differentiated
from surrounding villages. Several of the proposed development sites are
extending the town boundaries and should not go ahead.
Please feel free to contact me for further discussion if you wish.
