Princes Foundation Site Visioning (Indicative Masterplan 4)
We object to this development as it is on a “green field” site, something that Malmesbury
should avoid doing if at all possible.
There is also a major issue with this proposal that needs to be duly
The proposed new road links the development with the Swindon Road (B4042) at a particularly
dangerous point near the brow of a hill. This section of road is already very
busy, has known speeding issues and further joining traffic would be a risk to
the personal safety of both motorists and pedestrians. The road (B4042) at this
point is very narrow and has a narrow pavement on one side only which is
frequented by many pedestrians including school children.
We would suggest that in the event this development proceeds, it should
be connected with the A429 only
Draft Plan Section 3 (More Shopping Choice)
We moved to Malmesbury in April 2012. Having
only lived previously in more urban areas, we initially felt that plans for a
new supermarket were surely a good thing given the limited grocery shopping
options in the town. However, having lived here for one year we have completely
changed our view on this and now feel quite strongly that a large local
supermarket is not really necessary given the supermarkets in nearby towns and
the growth and ease of online grocery deliveries.
Furthermore, aside from any landscape spoiling issues, such a retailer can only have a major
detrimental impact on local high street retailers. While the loss of some retailers to online shopping is inevitable,
Malmesbury should act to protect its high street retail presence as much as
possible. The local high street shopping experience is a distinctive feature that attracts both residents and
visitors and is not something that should be taken for granted.
