If the Sainsbury application for a supermarket on the
Garden Centre site is allowed it would no doubt pay for a roundabout at the
Filands/ Crudwell Rd Junction. It would also give the town a second petrol
station which is badly needed, the existing one, Malmesbury Motors is usually
4-5 pence per litre more expensive than ones a few miles away. We support the
Sainsbury application. In 1980 The Backbridge Farm Development was going to
have an extended bypass to the Sherston Rd. In recent years there has been
little mention of this, but we hope whatever development takes place it will be
made to make a large "106 Contribution" towards a continuation bypass. This
would relieve the traffic problems in Bristol Street, Corn Gastons, Alexander
Road, White Lion etc. It would give a second entry point to the Junior School
which is badly needed and also give the school room to expand. Malmesbury High
Street could be made "to come alive" very quickly simply by giving one hour
free parking and getting rid of Hyams Motors free parking in the Cross Hayes.
The reason given that Hyams have been allowed to stay is because many years ago
North Wilts Council said they could not afford to go to court, at the same time
acknowledging that Hyams have no right to be there. Is this fair on all the
other residents? Some of the points we have mentioned are only going to get
worse with more development and we do not think the present Neighbourhood Plan
has given it enough consideration.
