It is our understanding that when the planning committee considers the two proposed supermarket sites in Malmesbury (Sainsbury's and Waitrose) the most relevant policy tests, which apply, state that 'proposals should not individually or cumulatively undermine the vitality and viability of the centre; and the proposal should be accessible by a range of means, including walking, cycling and public transport' (Policy R4).
As local businesses, trading in the centre of Malmesbury, collectively employing 343 people, it is our strongly held belief that the Sainsbury's proposal fails both aspects of this accepted policy statement and should be refused.
This conclusion has also been reached by the Malmesbury Neighbourhood Steering Group (MNSG) and stated in Section 3 the MNSG Draft Neighbourhood Plan, which concludes that the Waitrose site is the preferred option because of 'its closeness to the High Street and town and resulting economic benefit'.
Therefore as Malmesbury businesses (and residents!) we urge the planning committee to reject the Sainsbury's application as deeply damaging to Malmesbury High Street which is already blighted by several empty premises. Please follow established policy tests, reject the Sainsbury's proposal and help preserve our beautiful, vibrant town.
